Sickness, Pain & Meditation

2 min read

Last week I had the flu, and in the middle of a sleepless & feverish night came nausea.

I must confess......... I don't handle nausea well! I desperately wanted to sleep and needed to distract myself from the queasiness, so I used one of the best tools I know – meditation.

Sometimes I meditate on the breath by noticing it moving in and out of my body, but this type of meditation was no good here, my body was not feeling good amid the nausea, it was the last place I wanted to focus on, yuk!

Instead, I chose to meditate using visualisation and my breath. I visualised a calm sea with waves gently lapping against the shore, moving in and out with my breath. This practice worked, helping me to focus out of my body and I was able to drift off to sleep.

Meditation is a tool that I use daily for so many situations. I have a morning meditation practice to start my day, I have used meditation practices for having ecstatic births, meditations to help me when getting teeth pulled at the dentist, meditations that have supported spontaneous healings and so much more.

A meditation practice is like any practice, the more you do it, the better you get at it. Meditation is not about perfection it is about practicing this tool as best you can. To begin with you may find it difficult to focus for longer than a few seconds, that’s how I started out. My mind was all over the place with erratic thoughts in the beginning, but I persevered, and my dedication was well worth it.

I still have days when I struggle to focus my attention for longer than a minute, so remember it is a practice, there is nobody ticking boxes and checking if you are doing it right or wrong, it is a wonderful tool that will serve you well if you are patient and kind to yourself about it and just keeping showing up.
