1. Trying to push the thoughts away
2. Trying to avoid thinking the negative thoughts
3. Judging themselves for having the negative thoughts
Why these strategies don’t help.
Trying to push thoughts away - What we resist persists. If something is really bothering us and we try to push it away, the act of pushing against it only bring it more into our focus, it’s the same as the “Don’t think of a pink elephant” idea. As soon as you are aware of something and you decide its something you really don’t want, then you are giving it emotional charge which brings it into stronger focus. The best solution here is to accept that the thought has arisen and get curious. Ask yourself why is it here, what deeper issue is it pointing towards and question whether the thought is factual.
2. Trying to avoid thinking the negative thoughts - If the thought is recurring and troubling you then obviously avoiding it is not working (this is not the same as little worries that don’t linger). Negative thoughts that keep showing up chronically, are signalling to us that we need to investigate further as to why they keep showing up and why we feel so emotionally charged when we think them.
3. Judging themselves for having the negative thoughts - We all have negative thoughts; it is part of being human and some negative thoughts serve a purpose - to keep us safe from danger (e.g. I feel fearful of walking down that dark alley). However, the negative thoughts that are unhelpful and chronic are something we need to work on, but judging ourselves for having them will make it nearly impossible to let go of them. Instead of judging ourselves we can acknowledge that we did not consciously choose to have these negative thoughts, as we understand that the thought was created as a safety mechanism (usually created in childhood). This understanding and self-compassion makes it far easier to release the negative thought as its emotional charge is gone.
There are many practices that can be used to release negative belief systems, to rewire your brain and shift your vibration. Mindfulness, meditation, energy healing and cognitive behaviour therapy are some of the highly beneficial tools that I work with to support my clients.
